What is World Heritage?
World Heritage refers to heritage sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, recognized by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee as possessing Outstanding Universal Value that warrants protection for all humanity, in accordance with the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (1972).
World Heritage sites are classified into three categories:
1) Cultural Heritage
Historic monuments, architectural structures, and culturally significant sites Comprises 77.5% of all World Heritage sites globally
Jongmyo Shrine
Namhansanseong Fortress
Joseon royal tombs
2) Natural Heritage
Biological communities, geological formations, and habitats of endangered species
Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes
Korea's Tidal Flats
3) Mixed Heritage
Heritage sites that simultaneously fulfill the criteria for both cultural and natural heritage
